Athletics

Athletics was one of four sports which was present from the inception of Prep School in 1938. During the early days, it was present in the form of an Annual Sports Meet among the students of the school. By 1941, athletic competitions against other schools were being held with the first of these being against S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia. In 1964, our school team became the champions at the All Island Primary Schools Athletic Meet. Subsequently, in 1966 Shane Andree was adjudged to be the highest achiever at the All Island Primary Schools Meet as he broke the record in the 60-meter event. Later, in 1987, T. Alailima broke 2 records at the All Island Public Games Athletic Meet. More recently, after athletics at Prep School was revived by Mr. Jayamanne in 2010, M.K. Nazeem managed to win the trophy for the Most Outstanding Athlete at the All Island Athletic Meet in 2015 and M.A. Azmi was adjudged as the Best All Round Athlete in the Colombo South Division in 2017.

Athletic practices take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6.15 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. alternating between the School ground and the Torrington ground. Our school team is coached by Mr. Shivantha Weerasuriya, a former national sprinter who has represented Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Games and still holds the Sri Lankan record for the 4x400m relay. The current Master-In-Charge of Athletics is Mr. Devaka Weerasinghe.
